WEEK 4 SUBMISSION - Artists

Rosalie Gascoigne:

I have chosen Rosalie Gascoigne's 1994 geometric sculptural piece as an inspiration for this project. Most of her works that I have studied were rather abstract even though they were usually made of regular materials. The composition is so different that the over all affect is unexpected. Therefore the chosen word describing her work was "abstract". The way she arranges regular materials seems rather simple. However once studied closely, the whole array of designs appear rather complicated. There seems to be a strange balance between the usage of materials and the patterns created. Sometimes they are composed of words and other times they are images. Her work was chosen as they appeared interesting and unconventional because of the unexpected unity between her abstract pieces.

Tracey Moffat:

Tracey Moffat's 1998 photograph Laudanum provided inspiration for the project. The word describing this particular piece was darkness. The photograph was that of a lady and a young boy whos faces were hidden. It might have been taken through some sort of a window as squares made of wire like materials appear. The photograph is not coloured, hence the word darkness has been used to describe the environment which appears rather cold as the two characters do not face each other. Amongst all her photographs Laudanum appealed to me the most as it provided a lot of room for imagination. There was nothing direct about this photograph. The characters might have been sad or in complete silence or even in a fight, however that would be difficult to predict mainly because of the fact that Moffat skillfully decided to avoid capturing their faces.
